Printed magnetic boxes

The magnetic box has become the standard for premium unboxing because the lid closes quietly and precisely. The difference between a good and a poor magnetic box lies in magnet strength, lid thickness and how well the insert holds the product.

How the box is built

The base is built from 1.5-3 mm greyboard wrapped in printed paper. The lid is hinged at the rear and has a front flap with two to four magnets concealed between the boards. The flap folds down against the front wall, producing the characteristic closure. Collapsible versions ship flat and fold up on site.

Dimensions, fit and tolerance

Internal size follows the product plus insert. We normally allow 2-4 mm tolerance per side and check that the lid flap does not press against the contents. Front wall height affects how firmly the lid seats: too low and the magnets get less grip. All measurements are stated as internal size, external size and material thickness.

Print and finish

  • Soft-touch matt lamination gives a velvet surface but shows finger oils on dark colours.
  • Gloss lamination adds depth to colour and handles wear well.
  • Spot UV applies gloss selectively on a matt surface, often on the logo.
  • Foil and emboss work best on uninterrupted areas with clearance from the edge.

What VyPack does and what the supplier does

We produce the structure, dieline, material choice and print specification, review samples and follow production. Die-cutting, wrapping, magnet mounting and printing are carried out by selected suppliers; freight is handled by a forwarder. VyPack owns no factory and is responsible for specification, quality control and project management.

Material, structure and finish in detail

We review board quality, thickness, fit, print technique and finishing with you and turn it into a specification a supplier can produce against.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How strong should the magnets be?
Strong enough to keep the lid shut when the box is lifted, but not so strong that opening becomes awkward. We choose count and size from lid weight and verify in the sample.
Can magnetic boxes be used as shipping boxes?
We do not recommend it: the edges scuff easily. Use an outer transport carton, with simple void fill if needed.
Can a magnetic lid be combined with a pulp insert?
Yes. Moulded pulp or board inserts work well and are easier to recycle than foam.
How long does a magnetic box take to produce?
Normally 6-8 weeks after confirmed design, depending on finish, number of parts and supplier load.
