Common material groups

• Ivory board: smooth, bright and good printability for retail and premium.
• Kraft board: brown, strong and tolerant of handling.
• Corrugated in E, B and BC flute for transport and display.
• Greyboard as the structural sheet in rigid boxes.
• Moulded pulp for inserts with good cushioning.

Weight, thickness and stiffness

Grammage states weight per square metre, but stiffness decides whether board holds its shape. Two materials at the same grammage can behave differently depending on construction. For rigid boxes, thickness in millimetres is used instead, usually 1.5-3 mm. We choose from weight, format and how often the packaging is handled.

Surfaces and feel

Uncoated paper gives a matt, tactile surface but mutes colour. Coated gives saturated colours and sharper detail. Speciality papers with texture or dyed pulp give character without print. Lamination protects the surface; soft-touch matt feels velvety but shows fingerprints on dark colours.

Sustainability and recycling

Paper mono-materials are easiest to recycle. Lamination, foil and foam complicate recycling to varying degrees. We can propose design choices that reduce the number of materials, but verified environmental properties and certifications always come from material and supplier documentation, not from VyPack.
