Scalable production costs: how volume and design drive price

Tooling, print plates, material waste and freight volume are the four factors that most affect unit price.

The unit price of custom packaging is rarely linear. The first run carries setup costs such as die-cutting tools, print plates and any foil stamps.

Four factors to optimise

1) Volume per run: more units spread the setup cost. 2) Number of print colours and special finishes. 3) Material yield: a size that fits the sheet reduces waste. 4) Freight volume: flat-shipped structures cost less to transport.

Practical advice

Ask for pricing at two or three volume steps at once. You then see where the break point is and can plan stock instead of reordering too early.
